Ait Ben Haddou: Guide to Morocco’s Most Iconic Kasbah

5 day desert tour Morocco with Fes Merzouga Dades gorge and Marrakech circuit

Ait Ben Haddou is one of the most immediately striking stops on any Morocco desert tour — a compact cluster of earthen towers rising above the Ounila River roughly thirty kilometres northwest of Ouarzazate. Listed as a UNESCO World Heritage site, it has also become one of the world’s most-filmed locations, used as a backdrop for dozens of international film and television productions whose set designers needed something that looked ancient without being too obviously anywhere in particular.

What Is a Ksar?

Ait Ben Haddou is technically a ksar — a fortified collection of earthen buildings enclosed within defensive walls, built to protect both residents and the trans-Saharan caravan trade that once passed through the region. The construction material is rammed earth mixed with straw and sometimes gypsum, a technique that requires periodic repair against erosion by rain, which explains why the village has been restored multiple times while maintaining its original character. A handful of families still live within the walls, running small craft shops and guesthouses.

Walking Through the Ksar

The walk up through the ksar’s narrow earthen passageways to the hilltop granary takes around forty-five minutes at a comfortable pace and provides progressively better views over the valley and the modern village on the opposite bank of the river. Most travellers on a Unique 4-Day Private Desert Tour from Marrakech and Back that includes this stop spend about an hour here — enough to reach the top, take in the view, and return without rushing.

Practical Visiting Information

A small wooden footbridge crosses the Ounila River in dry conditions; after heavy winter rain the river can rise and require a short detour. Admission to the ksar itself is minimal. Early morning before 10am, or late afternoon from 4pm onward, gives the best light for photography and avoids the peak of the midday coach visits. The ksar faces southeast, so morning light falls directly on the towers; afternoon light works better from the far bank with the sun behind the photographer.

What Else Is Near Ait Ben Haddou

Ouarzazate, thirty kilometres east, holds the Taourirt Kasbah and the Atlas Corporation Studios, the latter open to visitors for a look at the sets and backlots used in various productions. The drive between the two passes through a lunar-looking landscape of eroded rock and occasional roadside kasbahs that sets the visual tone for the Sahara region. A 4-Day Fes to Marrakech with Full Day in the Desert typically combines both sites in the same day before continuing east toward the desert or north toward Marrakech.

Combining With the Desert Route

Ait Ben Haddou sits naturally on the route between Marrakech and the Sahara, making it a logical inclusion in any desert tour rather than a detour. The road continues east from here toward the Dades and Todra valleys before reaching Merzouga. For a full itinerary that includes Ait Ben Haddou as part of a multi-day desert journey, see our Luxury 4-Day Merzouga Private Desert Tour from Marrakech or browse the extended options on our Luxury 3-Day Desert Tour: Marrakech to Merzouga page.

Good srv We’re really glad we chose this tour. At first we planned just 3–4 days, but we changed to a 10-day trip starting from Casablanca, and it was absolutely worth it. We visited Casablanca, Rabat, the Blue City, and Fes, which we really enjoyed. One of the highlights was staying in a luxury desert camp right in the middle of the sand dunes, which was an amazing and unforgettable experience. On the way to Marrakech, we relaxed in a very authentic kasbah (Kasbah de Mimi), and then continued to Marrakech where we stayed in a beautiful riad. Everything was very well organized, we had great local guides, and our driver Said was excellent, very kind, always helpful, and spoke very good English. Overall, it was a wonderful experience that we will always remember.

Unforgettable Experience With Moha and Halid Moha and Halid are more than just guides. They are people with big hearts who put true passion into their work, and they love sharing the beauty of this country and its culture with those who come to visit. I had a wonderful experience, with them I never felt alone for a single moment. We left from Marrakech with a short stop to admire the breathtaking landscape of Tizi n’Tichka, the most famous road leading to Ouarzazate and Ait Ben Haddou, one of the desert’s UNESCO wonders. The next day, after passing through the Todra Gorges and stopping in the river valley, we continued our journey to Merzouga… sandboarding, dinner, and music under a sky full of stars, before heading back to Marrakech at sunrise. This trip gives you the chance to truly connect with the local culture and explore incredible landscapes, all while being guided by two amazing people with whom I laughed and talked so much. Without them, the experience wouldn’t have been the same . absolutely unforgettable! I highly recommend choosing them for your next trip with their professionalism, kindness, and great sense of humor, they’ll make your journey even more special! Thank you so much, and see you next time, my friends ❤️

My exciting trip with Moha I had a fantastic trip with our guide Moha. He was always extremely supportive, knowledgeable, and very funny, which made the whole journey so much more enjoyable. The accommodation and meals throughout the tour were also great — much better than we expected. If I had to mention one thing that could be improved: on the second day, the local guide at the oasis (I forgot his name) didn’t speak very good English, and we spent too much time in the carpet shop, which made the schedule a bit rushed afterwards. I would have loved to spend more time in the valley. Overall, still an amazing experience — highly recommended!

Amazi(gh)ng We had the most amazing experience with our group in the Merzouga desert, and during the trip to go there from marrakech. Our guide Moha was the best we could wish for, framing the dynamics of the group (what a difficult task with so many nationalities and personalities !), leading us to amazing and specifically chosen places and guides for visits, being flexible yet righteous towards everyone. The trip is well organised, stunning, we meet beautiful people, do amazing (and Amazighs ! lol) things, learn a lot, in all possible ways 🩵 thank you so much to Moha and to the group (and to Benef the monkey-sloth) for this adventure, keep going, life is beautiful✨ ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
