The Road of a Thousand Kasbahs: What to See and When to Stop

Berber villages tours in the High Atlas visiting traditional mud-brick settlements and families

The Road of a Thousand Kasbahs is the popular name for the pre-Saharan route running east from Ouarzazate through the Skoura palm grove, the Dades Valley, and toward Tinghir — named for the remarkable concentration of historic earthen kasbahs and ksour that line its length. The figure of a thousand is evocative rather than literal, but the density of mud-brick fortified architecture along this single road is genuinely unusual even by Morocco’s standards.

Ouarzazate: The Gateway

Ouarzazate serves as the natural starting point, itself offering the Kasbah of Taourirt and the Studios Atlas nearby — a working film complex that has hosted productions from Lawrence of Arabia to Game of Thrones, exploiting the same stark desert aesthetic that makes the region so visually distinctive. It is a workable half-day stop before continuing east along the kasbah route on a About Us.

Skoura’s Hidden Palm Grove

Just east of Ouarzazate, the Skoura oasis contains several well-preserved kasbahs within a dense palm grove, including Kasbah Amridil, one of the most photogenic earthen structures in the south, which has appeared on Moroccan banknotes. Skoura sees far fewer visitors than Ait Ben Haddou, making it a worthwhile stop for travellers on a 4-Day Morocco Tour: Casablanca to Marrakech who want a comparable architectural experience with considerably less company.

The Dades Valley

The Dades Valley’s signature features are the so-called Monkey Fingers rock formations near Boumalne Dades — a sequence of eroded rock towers visible from the road — and the kasbahs perched on ridges above the river, several of which have been converted into guesthouses with direct gorge views. The road climbs through steep switchbacks into the upper valley, narrowing considerably with views back down the canyon that reward the effort of continuing beyond the standard viewpoints.

Todra Gorge

The route continues toward Tinghir and the entrance to the Todra Gorge, where sheer limestone walls rise hundreds of metres above a narrow river — a dramatic contrast after the relatively open Dades landscape. The gorge is also a well-regarded rock-climbing destination with reliable routes on the canyon walls, though most travellers experience it by walking the valley floor road or sitting beside the shallow stream that runs through the base.

Practical Route Planning

The full stretch from Ouarzazate to the Todra Gorge exit takes a full day with stops, making it impractical as a rushed add-on but straightforward as a dedicated day within a longer itinerary. An overnight in the Dades or Todra area allows proper time in both valleys rather than viewing them from a moving vehicle. See our Gallery for routes incorporating the full kasbah road, or 5-Day Marrakech Dunes Tour to Merzouga for itineraries focused on this stretch as the primary desert experience.

Good srv We’re really glad we chose this tour. At first we planned just 3–4 days, but we changed to a 10-day trip starting from Casablanca, and it was absolutely worth it. We visited Casablanca, Rabat, the Blue City, and Fes, which we really enjoyed. One of the highlights was staying in a luxury desert camp right in the middle of the sand dunes, which was an amazing and unforgettable experience. On the way to Marrakech, we relaxed in a very authentic kasbah (Kasbah de Mimi), and then continued to Marrakech where we stayed in a beautiful riad. Everything was very well organized, we had great local guides, and our driver Said was excellent, very kind, always helpful, and spoke very good English. Overall, it was a wonderful experience that we will always remember.

Unforgettable Experience With Moha and Halid Moha and Halid are more than just guides. They are people with big hearts who put true passion into their work, and they love sharing the beauty of this country and its culture with those who come to visit. I had a wonderful experience, with them I never felt alone for a single moment. We left from Marrakech with a short stop to admire the breathtaking landscape of Tizi n’Tichka, the most famous road leading to Ouarzazate and Ait Ben Haddou, one of the desert’s UNESCO wonders. The next day, after passing through the Todra Gorges and stopping in the river valley, we continued our journey to Merzouga… sandboarding, dinner, and music under a sky full of stars, before heading back to Marrakech at sunrise. This trip gives you the chance to truly connect with the local culture and explore incredible landscapes, all while being guided by two amazing people with whom I laughed and talked so much. Without them, the experience wouldn’t have been the same . absolutely unforgettable! I highly recommend choosing them for your next trip with their professionalism, kindness, and great sense of humor, they’ll make your journey even more special! Thank you so much, and see you next time, my friends ❤️

My exciting trip with Moha I had a fantastic trip with our guide Moha. He was always extremely supportive, knowledgeable, and very funny, which made the whole journey so much more enjoyable. The accommodation and meals throughout the tour were also great — much better than we expected. If I had to mention one thing that could be improved: on the second day, the local guide at the oasis (I forgot his name) didn’t speak very good English, and we spent too much time in the carpet shop, which made the schedule a bit rushed afterwards. I would have loved to spend more time in the valley. Overall, still an amazing experience — highly recommended!

Amazi(gh)ng We had the most amazing experience with our group in the Merzouga desert, and during the trip to go there from marrakech. Our guide Moha was the best we could wish for, framing the dynamics of the group (what a difficult task with so many nationalities and personalities !), leading us to amazing and specifically chosen places and guides for visits, being flexible yet righteous towards everyone. The trip is well organised, stunning, we meet beautiful people, do amazing (and Amazighs ! lol) things, learn a lot, in all possible ways 🩵 thank you so much to Moha and to the group (and to Benef the monkey-sloth) for this adventure, keep going, life is beautiful✨ ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
